Just Do It: Top 5 Excuses for Not Exercising by Brett Blumenthal asserts, “Nike makes a great point. Those three simple words – Just Do It – really sums up a lot of things in life.” In her article Just Do It: Top 5 Excuses for Not Exercising, Blumenthal lists our favorite “obstacles” for exercising and ways to overcome them. The bottom line? JUST DO IT. So if you are having a difficult time getting or staying motivated to exercise, check out the article by clicking on the link above…Go ahead, Just do it!
As I read this article, it reminded me of another place where an excuse was given for inactivity. John, Chapter 5 says, ” When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.”
Have you been waiting for a reason to “Get Well?” Have you been sitting on the edge, paralyzed, unable to MOVE toward the very thing that can heal you? Perhaps your physical pain keeps you lying on your mat, you have been in the habit of sitting and waiting to feel better for so long, you have forgotten that movement is the very thing that can make you well. Or is it that you are waiting for someone to “stir the water” for you? Someone else to do the work for you, to motivate you? Sometimes its the “someone else’s” that keep us from moving. Every time you start to move toward a new routine, do you get discouraged because someone “moves” faster than you, gets ahead of you? Like the man at the edge of the pool, we can be paralyzed by our own fear or feelings that we are not good enough to move, so there we sit…waiting by the pool instead of wading in the pool! But what does Jesus say to this man after he lists all the reasons he can’t, all of his obstacles to healing? “Get up, pick up your mat and walk!” Jesus spoke truth to the man, and by faith, the man who had been sitting and waiting, began moving…and he was cured!
So whether it is physical pain or a deeper spiritual/emotional pain that paralyzes you and keeps you from moving forward toward healing, keep these things in mind:
1. The truth of God’s word through Jesus is meant for you too. If He tells you to “Get up and move, ” He will give you the strength to do it. So, Just do it!
(Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”)
2. You do not need to wait for someone else to do it for you. It is not someone else’s responsibility to “make sure” you get moving toward the thing that can heal you! Although support of our friends and family is a gift that God gives us, He only accountability partner we need. The One who created you equips you to MOVE. What step do you need to take? Just do it!
(Matthew 19:26b- “With God, all things are possible.”)
3. What others do, how they move, and the speed at which they “walk” (or run)!- does not affect God’s call to YOU. God’s timing for YOU is the perfect timing, His path for you is the perfect path, His design of you is the perfect design. Find YOUR path, YOUR pace, YOUR plan that God has designed for you and…JUST DO IT!
(Jeremiah 29:11- “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”)
