This article discusses one of the most intriguing studies about the effects on dieting (food restriction) done during World War II on MEN. What scientists learned as a result of this study helped to shape the type of non-restrictive healthy eating described in the book “Intuitive Eating” by Tribole and Resch. Check out Wilson’s article which not only describes the study but explains how going from dieting and restrictive eating to listening to your body’s hunger cues can be beneficial to your health goals.
As with all things, we can turn to Scripture to help us determine what is right for our bodies. After all, the One who created us knows what is best to take care of us, right? Although the phrase, “intuitive eating” is not mentioned, there are several scriptures that discuss food, our minds, and how it relates to our faith.
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “So I tell you to stop worrying about what you will eat or wear. Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothes. Luke 12: 22-23
Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. Romans 14:19-20
Perhaps the most precious passage to me is one that reminds me that not only is my life more than food and clothes (or even how they fit!), but that if I seek NOT these earthly things, but rather SEEK God in all things…He will provide, protect, and guide my life. Yes, it is important for us to learn to listen to what our bodies need- our CREATOR made our bodies to “tell” us these things and we learn to respond with proper nutrition and activity. But even more so, we must learn to be more than intuitive with our faith…we must be intentionally seeking God. This is the key to being content with the gift God has given us with our bodies…if we are seeking Him and His will for our lives, we will be keeping our eyes focused on the one thing that matters-HIM, instead of the scale.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:25-33)
