oday, in honor of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week (www.nedawareness.org) I am taking a brief detour from my typical FAITHful Fitness Friday posting. No worries though, in a sense, this post has to do with our FAITHful Fitness!
The Free Dictionary Online defines “fitness” as the following:
1. The state or condition of being fit; suitability or appropriateness.
As Christians, we are called to keep our bodies and our souls in a condition which is suitable and appropriate for doing HIS work. This is our motive for physical and spiritual exercise. Whenever we are thinking about our physical fitness goals, we need to keep our focus on our spiritual fitness goals as well. Instead of thinking about numbers on a scale, clothing sizes, how far we can run or how many situps we can do, we need to remember that the only number that matters is ONE: One God, One Savior, One Cross, One Resurrection.
Constance Rhodes, the founder and CEO of FINDINGbalance-
a media-based resource for those seeking freedom from eating and body image issues, has a new partnership with Compassion International which seeks to call us all to the proper focus for our lives. On the FINDINGbalance website (www.findingbalance.com
) she makes this point: “Americans spend $62 billion dollars/yr. on diets. This same amount can END world hunger!”
In this campaign, called MORE THAN A NUMBER (www.morethananumber.net
), she compares girls who find themselves in two types of “Thin Cages”–one self-imposed, one not–both influenced by the culture around them. Whether you have an eating disorder or you don’t, this video will speak to you. Listen, watch, and pray about how we can, through Christ, “change our value…and change the world.”
