COREnews: NEDAwareness Week- Excellent Resources for Recovery

NEDAwarenessLogoAs part of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week, I am sharing information to help you be “In the KNOW” about eating disorders and, more importantly RECOVERY from them!

Did you know?

Only 1 in 10 men and women with eating disorders receive treatment. Only 35% ofpeople who receive treatment for eating disorders get treatment at a specialized facility for eating disorders.  (In the U.S. approximately 24 MILLION people struggle with eating disorders, so 1 in 10 is still a huge number!!)**

There is good news… groups like NEDA are working to create awareness, conduct research, and hopefully, one day, make treatment possible for every person who needs it.

But in the meantime, there are other groups reaching out to support and encourage people to seek recovery, and live free from a life from the horrors of eating disorders.  Let me tell you about two of them that are close to my heart.

MentorCONNECT– the world’s first online global eating disorders support community.  I have had the privilege of serving as a volunteer mentor for MC for several years and now sit on the Board of Directors for this organization.  The founder, Shannon Cutts, started MC  to equip those in recovery to reach out for support and encouragement to other people in a stronger place of recovery as she had been mentored in her own journey. (Find out more of her story in her book, Beating Ana.)   MentorCONNECT offers an online forum, group support chats, and a free monthly teleconference series as well as one-to-one mentoring for those interested in a higher form of accountability.

Findingbalance– A little over a year ago, I came across the website for this wonderful resource and subsequently met and befriended the founder of Fb, Constance Rhodes.  Her book, Life Inside the Thin Cage, chronicles her experience with body image issues and the grey areas of eating disorders.    I really like this resource because it is unique in that it is provides Christian resources and encouragement for recovery.  Not only that, but there are a variety of resource options such as a book study, an online/in-person group called The Gathering, and, most recently a new webinar/skype support group program called Lasting Freedom.  Also, Findingbalance collaborates with many well-known speakers, authors, therapists, and musicians to host HUNGRY FOR HOPE– a conference designed for both professionals and community centered around finding hope and freedom through Christ.  I am pleased to be serving as the Volunteer Coordinator for this event and enjoy being a part of the steering team for this awesome event!

If you or someone you know would benefit from ANY of these resources- or you just want to know more information, please feel free to contact me or the many great volunteers who serve at these organizations.  Everyone deserves to know they are not alone, that recovery is possible, and there is hope!
